Today, I caught myself thinking about everything I should be doing.
I could be studying ahead, working on a project, exercising, organizing my room, or doing something that would make the day feel “productive.” Even during summer, when life is supposed to slow down, it can feel uncomfortable to do absolutely nothing.
Students are constantly encouraged to work harder and prepare for what comes next. There is always another test, activity, application, or goal waiting for us. Because of this, taking a break can sometimes feel less like resting and more like falling behind.
But our minds are not machines. We cannot expect ourselves to keep working without eventually becoming exhausted. Rest gives our brains time to process everything we have been carrying. It can make us feel calmer, think more clearly, and return to our responsibilities with more energy.
Rest also does not have to mean spending an entire day asleep or doing nothing. It could be taking a walk, listening to music, sitting outside, reading for fun, or putting your phone away for a little while. The important part is allowing yourself to pause without turning that pause into another task you have to complete perfectly.
We often treat rest like a reward we receive after finishing everything. The problem is that there will almost always be something else to finish.
Sometimes, taking care of your mental health means recognizing that you do not have to earn a break. You are allowed to rest simply because you need it.
